Endovenous laser treatment or EVLT uses laser energy to close off varicose veins. Laser heat is delivered directly into the affected vein using a very narrow catheter. The heat causes the vessel walls to seal closed, so the vein is eventually eliminated through the body’s natural processes. Blood is rerouted through healthy veins nearby.
ABOUT THE PROCEDURE
EVLT is performed at Advanced Vein Center on an outpatient basis and does not require any type of anesthesia. A single micro-incision is used to insert the catheter into the vein, which does not need any suturing and leaves little or no scarring. Most patients are able to return to their daily activities on the same day or the day after treatment.
EVLT SUPPORTED BY STUDIES
Studies have shown laser treatment to be an effective way to permanently eliminate unsightly, uncomfortable spider and varicose veins and help improve cosmetic appearance. In fact, a 2012 study published in JAMA Dermatology found EVLT was just as safe and effective as traditional vein stripping but yielded better cosmetic results with less post-procedural scarring. Rates of recurrence after EVLT were also lower. It is now the accepted standard of care, as laser treatments effectively manage the underlying problem while stripping techniques only remove the visible vein at the surface.
EVLT is a popular method for eliminating varicose veins for medical or cosmetic vein treatment and their painful symptoms and to see cosmetic improvements. To learn more about this treatment, contact the Advanced Vein Center at 207-772-1820. A medical and cosmetic vein center serving Portland areas.
